Major Signs of the Day of Judgment in Islam

In Islamic teachings, the Great Day of Judgment (Kiamat Kubra) is the final event that will end life in this world and mark the beginning of the afterlife. The Qur'an and the Hadiths of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) mention numerous signs that will precede the arrival of the Last Day. These signs are divided into minor signs (Ash-Shughra) and major signs (Al-Kubra).

Below are the major signs (Al-Kubra) that indicate the coming of the Great Day of Judgment according to Islamic belief.

The 10 Major Signs of the Day of Judgment

1. The Appearance of the Dajjal (Antichrist)

   • A great deceiver who will claim to be a god.

   • He will perform miracles to mislead people.

   • His arrival will be a massive trial that will test the faith of humanity.

2. The Descent of Prophet Isa (Jesus), Peace Be Upon Him

   • Prophet Isa (AS) will return to earth.

   • He will kill the Dajjal and establish justice.

   • He will live a normal life on earth, marry, and eventually pass away.

3. The Emergence of Gog and Magog (Ya’juj and Ma’juj)

   • Two wild and destructive nations.

   • They will break free from a barrier that has held them back.

   • They will cause great corruption before being destroyed by Allah.

4. The Rising of the Sun from the West

   • A supernatural event where the sun will rise from the west instead of the east.

   • It signifies the closing of the door of repentance.

   • After this event, belief will no longer be accepted from disbelievers.

5. The Appearance of the Beast of the Earth (Dabbatul Ard)

   • A strange creature that will speak to mankind.

   • It will distinguish between true believers and disbelievers.

   • Mentioned in Surah An-Naml, verse 82.

6. The Thick Smoke (Ad-Dukhan)

   • A massive smoke will cover the earth.

   • It is referenced in Surah Ad-Dukhan.

   • It will cause suffering, especially for disbelievers, while believers will only experience it briefly.

7. Three Major Earthquakes or Sinkings (Khasf)

   • Three major landslides or ground collapses will occur:

     • One in the East

     • One in the West

     • One in the Arabian Peninsula

8. A Great Fire from Yemen

   • A massive fire will emerge from the region of Yemen.

   • It will drive people to the place of final gathering (Mahsyar).

Hadith Evidence on the Major Signs

It is narrated in an authentic hadith:

"The Hour will not be established until you see ten major signs..."
(Hadith narrated by Muslim, No. 2901)

These ten signs are explained in detail across several authentic narrations by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Conclusion

The major signs of the Day of Judgment serve as a serious reminder for humanity to return to the path of righteousness. In Islam, although the exact time of the Last Day is unknown (Qur'an, Surah Al-A'raf: 187), Muslims are instructed to always be vigilant, repent sincerely, perform good deeds, and strengthen their faith.
